Corporate Social Responsibility
We recognise we have a broader role to play in our community and our people have a long history of giving back in a range of ways including volunteering their time, expertise and funds.
We are committed to providing legal services on a pro bono basis and over the last two financial years we have averaged nearly 20 hours of pro bono work per lawyer, per year. Last financial year alone the value of that work was around $400,000.
Pro bono services are provided to selected clients on a best practice basis – meaning that pro bono work is budgeted, separately monitored and provided to the same high standards as full fee-paying work.
We have an active Corporate Social Responsibility Committee, chaired by a senior member of the firm, through which we provide financial support to a number of charities. We also encourage our team to participate in our corporate giving program.
Recent community activities have included The Smith Family Christmas Appeal and the Cancer Council’s City Mile Dash, the latter of which saw us raising $22,000 for cancer research in 2016. Bartier Perry is also a signatory for the Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation.
We are also a Western Sydney University Scholarship donor, pledging $150,000 for 4 scholarships to law students from 2015-2022. On top of these scholarships we also contribute financially to a scholarship for a refugee student of the University’s choice.
A number of lawyers in the firm have significant expertise in the structuring of not-for-profit enterprises and trusts and in the application of tax concessions to these kinds of entities. We have been able to guide many organisations through the complexities in this area and through the regulatory reform that has taken place almost constantly in recent years.
We have an extensive client base operating in the not-for-profit sector and while only some of our clients can be selected for pro bono assistance, we typically offer discounted rates to not-for-profit organisations as well as access to free information and seminars.
